Maľovanie širokým ťahom štetca / Painting with broad brushstrokes

Jednotlivé figúry určujú centrum percepcie a v tejto nekompromisnosti treba hľadať špecifiku tohto maliarskeho idiolektu.

Ormandíkovo utrpenie Ježiša Krista nechce byť korigované nejakým kánonom kompozície, nechce byť obmedzované tradicionalizovanou ikonografiou, a do tretice nechce byť poplatné kultúrnym predsudkom.

Afekty môžu mať svoje obrazy, aj to len približné, no nikdy nemôžu mať svoje absolútne presné a všeobecne platné pojmy. Umelec musí prostredníctvom štetca a farby pohotovo nanášať chvenie a emočné vibrácie, pretože každý asynchrónny posun vedie k ochladzovaniu emócie, čo sa zákonite musí prejaviť v pravdivosti obrazu.

-----------------------------------

Marek Ormandík likes to paint using broad brushstrokes. This is clear to everybody who knows his artwork so it seems useless to pay close attention to it. However, why does he always choose to paint with broad strokes? That is a question worth exploring. Is it just a pose to guarantee that his painter´s “handwriting” is distinguished, or, is there something else behind it? It is definitely not a pose, that is why a much wider interpretation is required.

Whilst looking at his pictures we easily notice human figures everywhere – regardless of the fact that the theme of his paintings is sacral or mundane. It is amazing how insistent the figures are to the viewer. The expressiveness that the figures impress the viewer with is amazing. The pressing intensity makes the viewers forget the background – and they find themselves realising this after a very short time. The usual balance between the background and the foreground is disturbed in an asymmetric manner for the benefit of the forefront figures. It is the individual figures that decide the centre of perception, without any compromise. This intransigency constitutes the specificity of the painter´s idiolect.

Ormandík´s figures are like the human face. We do not query, however, what the faces think about (wanting to paraphrase the philosopher). We always ask ourselves what the faces feel, what are they going through, what is happening to them? The painter always strives to capture the expressiveness of the affects. They might be the affects of joy or pain, but they are always the primary affects, not the ones processed through culture. Ormandík´s sufferings of Jesus Christ do not want to be corrected by a canon of composition. Or restricted by traditionalised iconography. Or even to be conformed by cultural stereotypes or prejudices. The human figures that are intensely governed by the uncontrolled, almost childish joy, are depicted in situations where they are sure that nobody can see them. I could go into details of other affects but I would rather mention something much more important instead.

After this brief introduction it is high time to say that the main topic of Ormandík´s paintings are not the human figures themselves, but images of human affects. Metaphorically speaking, the major roles are featured by expressions, passions and emotions - as a whole they can be labelled as affects (even though inaccurately and temporarily). People feature the minor roles, since they are completely controlled by the affects. The human brain is powerless against them. They simply corner people and do whatever they want with them. Nevertheless, capturing the pure affects is very difficult. The templates of the mind can be formalised and yielded to general rules, but it is hard to generalise the affects. It is partially due to the fact that they like to merge and mix together, unlike concepts. Affects can be represented by images, but that would be just an approximate approach. They can never be grasped by absolute, exact and generally valid notions. Marek Ormandík knows this truth very well. He devoted years concentrating his paintwork on affects. It is this effort that might provide the answer to the question of why he uses broad brushstrokes. This is perhaps because he understands the brush as an indicator that records even the smallest tremble and the most negligible vibration.

The brush and paints he applies on his canvas do not serve the formal rules of art, but they serve the final artistic message the artist radiates to the world. In other words: the brush, the paints, the artist´s hand and his emotions all constitute one enthusiastic entity that represents the human psychic through which the expressions of others are voiced. The artist has to readily lay down the trembling energy and emotional vibrations. Any asynchronous shift cools the emotions down and that is inevitably shown in the truthfulness of his images.

Marek Ormandík is an heir of a specific tradition. He does not even have to declare it since his pictures do represent irrefutable proof. The fact he was uncovered should not be taken as a negative. Just the opposite: it is positive, since his paintings have impressed someone. Someone has noticed the insistency and someone, due to the images, felt the strange and special oscillations and vibrations. This is a clear message then, about a definite change to Marek Ormandík becoming an “affectless cyberpunk” being postponed for a very long time.

Pa-da-dá-da-dááá / Pa-da-daah-da-daaah

- Martin Gerboc

V Markových maľbách je, samozrejme, cítiť veľké pôsobenie hudby: obsesívne takty džezových odpaľovákov, zavýjanie Parkerovho altsaxofónu, obsedantné Burtonove vibrafónove sóla, Redmanov tenorsaxofón, no najmä – a to si zapamätajte – ústredná Davisova linka v kultovej „round midnight“: pa-da-dá-da-da-da-dááá, pa-da-dá-da-dááá, stále hlbšie a hlbšie a ešte nižšie, potom mierne nahor, do toho rytmické bicie a po chvíli zas to mierne disharmonické kvílenie plné neprekonateľnej nostalgie.

A ešte dve spomienky.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The skinny ochre figure of a boy of indefinable age kneels in the middle of an unpleasant and hostile violet field. It is crystal clear that he is experiencing his deepest moments: maybe the awareness of helplessness, the impossibility of escaping this bastardly world, maybe a mystical feeling of the realization of the uniqueness of the moment filled with pain or only of much needed loneliness and humility, free of any pseudo-intellectual constructions.

From certain times, Marek’s ecstatic painting has for me a distinctive affinity to the expressive paintings of Jakub Špaňhel or let’s say, Cecily Brown.  But with the difference that in his case, the orgiastic culminations of each stroke of the brush are manifested in a much less sophisticated position than every other potential position of increasingly expressive painting, drowning in toothless notions of “noble” art. That, after all, is the benefit of his method! And actually, the notion of that “high” does not mean much for Marek; thank God, this liberates his work from strange influences, sterile comparisons and non-authentic experiences.  The rhizomatic obsessions of Karl Appel, paint flowing from the canvass’s surface, the proliferating intensity of the stroke, and the dodecaphonic constructions of unplanned strokes, erections of animalistic colors… this mixing of elements and the untamed joy of the process can not be grasped in any form of verbal expression. Thus, his paintings most certainly can not be described by any exactly deliverable words; they are too concrete to attack the viewer with the same intensity as the painting itself, in their limiting area they are incapable of expressing any inner experience.

Of course, the great effect of music can be felt in Marek’s paintings: the obsessive times of jazz anthems, the howling of Parker’s  alt sax, Burton’s compulsive vibraphone solos, Redman’s tenor sax, but especially – and remember this – the central line in Davis’s cult “Round Midnight”: pa-da-daah-da-da-da-daaah, pa-da-daah-da-daaah, deeper and deeper and even lower, then slightly up, rhythmic drums entering and after a while again that slightly disharmonic howling full of unsurpassable nostalgia.  I think these positions are a priority in Ormandík’s work: he is not after something so banally over-intellectual as the notion of some amorphous and still adored “art.”  It is good that does not care at all for that.  Only the pure procession-ness, the attack of the white canvass, the urge to taint any emptied area by any manifestation of one’s own existence – and the stroke of the brush is, by the way, only one of the possible manifestations.

We met first Marek sometime in 1990  in the school hallways. Since then I have his intimate drawing of Christ covered by all available stigmata of the surrounding world before my eyes, a large penis, which juts through his white loin cloth, and so forth and so forth. He had already shouldered the image of a martyr-hedonist, fifty-fifty, without a manual for a distinct period, in which one of these two characters would win out over the other.

And two more memories.

First: Venice some fifteen-sixteen years ago. A bedroom filled with snoring sopranos. Lights go off after a while and at that moment an agonized call for help is heard from the direction of Marek’s bed. A large crucified Christ glowing in yellow appears before Marek on the opposite wall. Someone nearby jumps to the switch and with relief we learn that a luminous crucifix is hanging on the wall.  None of us noticed it until then because a) the color was identical to that of the wall, and b) the object itself at that time somehow was not “in” for us.

Veľké veci Mareka Ormandíka / The Great Things of Marek Ormandík

Na druhej strane oproti tomuto počtu stojí pomerne neveľký register tém, ktorému dominujú tváre a vôbec ľudské figúry, biblické výjavy a zvieratá.

a jednoznačnú odpoveď.

A nemusia to byť len diela výtvarného umenia.

v hlave. A nielen to!
a skupín. Vyžaduje si to tému, ktorú potom rozvíjajú a variujú.

o čo sa on sám usiluje vo svojej tvorbe.

Marek Ormandík svoj špecifický štýl maľovania podriaďuje zachyteniu mimiky tváre
a gesta tiel v ich premenlivosti.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone with an elementary reception experience with the paintings and drawings of Marek Ormandík can be interested by one visible contradiction. On the one hand, it is obvious that he derives great pleasure out of painting and drawing and among others, his above average number of paintings and drawings is proof of this. On the other hand, a relatively small register of themes dominated by faces and human figures in general, biblical scenes and animals stands opposite to this number.  To the superficial spectator, this ascetic register of themes could be a sure sign of the absence of artistic creativity.  However, for attentive spectators, or at least those spectators who repeatedly deal with his work, it is just this minimalism which could be and is the impulse for deeper deliberation. Since I have repeatedly written and talked about Marek Ormandík’s paintings and drawings on various occasions, I place myself on the other side without the slightest hesitation; with those who ask themselves a simple question: What does this ascetic register of themes indicate?

The question is simple, maybe even banal for some.  However, despite this plain and unambiguously asked question, it will not be possible to give an equally plain and unambiguous answer. I am even convinced that it won’t even be possible to provide a single answer.  But since the question has been asked, an answer must be formulated. I would like to point out from the very beginning that I will give an answer exclusively on behalf of myself, without any claim for agreement from the readers.

I am convinced that the already mentioned asceticism of the register indicates Ormandík’s understanding of the specifics of fine art. Because theme and substance are not important for the artist, but the method in which

this substance is formed. Since we are talking about substance, we must add that it must be apprehended within two meanings in artistic creation.  The term “substance” designates the represented objects and events of the real or fictitious worlds which have “settled” in the form of visual and verbal traces in the individual memory of the author or in the collective memory of a certain community.   These traces serve as “raw material” which is artistically recycled.  Ormandík can productively use and treat the impulses coming from the currently experienced world as well as the intense impulses having their source in the works of other artists. And these need not be the works of fine art only. In this case, music also plays a significant role, particularly jazz and rock, and of course, theater. But the term “substance” also designates color; it means the raw material which constitutes the prequalification for the existence of expression. The process of artistic work is then, in fact, the process in which the artist gives form to one as well as the other substance. The outcome of the forming of the first substance is constituted by the plan of the content; simply, a continuum of the designated one originates, the outcome of the forming of the other substance is constituted by the plan of expression, it means the continuum of the designating one.

Although the plan of the content and the plan of the expression are born simultaneously in Ormandík’s work, they are not represented symmetrically. But I dare say that the plan of the expression is hierarchically superior to that of the content. It is not the represented human faces or figures, biblical scenes or animals that stand at the center of attention, but the method of their representation. What is this asymmetry rooted in? First of all, in the intent to capture the expressions of the face or human body. When I think about that, intent is not the precise term; it would be more precise to say that it is a kind of obsession. The painter does not try to paint a portrait of a man who has a name, a biography, but he again and again strives to capture the face or the expression of the human figure. Emmanuel Lévinas, the philosopher, said that a face was meaning without context, and Marek Ormandík strives to find the expression for this meaning. Yet the problem lies in the fact that this meaning is not something static, because humans through every motion of their bodies, every gesture or facial expression show what they are thinking, what they feel, although not always consciously and intentionally. The face always expresses a meaning, yet this meaning constantly changes; mood replaces mood, thoughts swirl. And not only that! Let’s take, for example, laughter. Smiling is not laughing, and when laughter becomes uproarious that can mean something completely opposite from what was expressed by the laughter. Animals also can express emotions. According to Konrad Lorenz, the world famous ethologist, the emotionality of animals even exceeds that of people and that is why the theme of animals can also belong to this sphere. In spite of this changeability, Ormandík strives to capture the expressions of human and animal faces. He strives to capture these expressions, to give a readable expression to affect and emotion, although he knows that his paintings have shown, show and always will show only the already mentioned expressions.  This roughness is of the nature of something that is approaching the aim but not quite reaching it. What has led me to formulate this statement? Without any hesitation, I say that it is the artist’s fascination with music, jazz in particular. This fascination is presented to non-experts through booklets for the works of Slovak jazz musicians and groups, because Ormandík’s paintings are frequently reproduced in them. But this fascination with jazz can also be shown differently, which is already a direct part of the work. It is generally known that jazz musicians like to improvise. This requires a theme which they develop and vary. Ormandík does something similar. He too likes to improvise and I dare to say that he always does. He has several themes which he develops and varies, and this is how he gets closer to that aim, which he can not achieve in principle. This does not represent any interference, because in this case it is not important if the aim is achieved or not. The journey itself is what is important for the artist, and the visual report from the trip is what is important for the spectator.

It has been already mentioned expressis verbis that it is not what the paintings and drawings try to capture that is interesting, but how they try to do this. And when we begin to deal with this strange “how” then in fact we begin to deal with style. In slightly more than a decade, Marek Ormandík has succeeded in creating his own style which can be reliably identified by spectators. But it is as if his foundation was not in painting, but sculpting. He seems to sculpt a form from paint with every stroke of his brush, as if he wants to produce a plastic shape out of it; as if a haptic experience is his foundation and not an optic one.   His family environment played a significant role in this. Milan Ormandík, his father, is a sculptor, but I mention this only marginally because the “haptic” style of painting of his son is distant from what he himself strives for in his work.

Marek Ormandík subordinates his specific style of painting to capture facial expressions and bodily gestures in their changeability. Metaphorically speaking, each of his paintings can be apprehended as a model of a face. Clearly, if a model is to fulfill its purpose, it must represent a certain sector of reality. It means that it derives its meaning from what it represents and at the same time from the fact that he simplifies the represented to a larger or smaller degree.  The same applies in this case. The paintings represent a face, a body or a part of it and sometimes even a minimal group of human figures, all of which can be placed on an imaginative objective pole. And what can be placed on an equally imaginative subjective pole?  Basically, the fact that a facial expression or bodily gesture expresses certain moods, emotional feelings or affects, in short, certain expressions, traits that belong to humans as a species. Painting with swift and clearly readable strokes serves this purpose and every stroke seems to want to sketch the fold of a face or the position of a body. When someone creates a portrait, the portrayed person, as the model, can sit for as long as the painter requires.  According to its definition, a portrait should represent a certain unique feature that is typical for the portrayed person and which persists in time as his/her “substance” and not as an “accident”. However, if the painter tries to capture something that belongs to the moment, that changes according to the circumstances, he/she does not have this possibility and he/she must act as promptly as Marek Ormandík. Everybody will understand it better when they see the master at work, when they witness how he strives to capture or better to say, how he strives to give some permanent form to some artifact through wide brush strokes.  In general, painting with wide strokes of the brush has its weaknesses and strengths. The basic weakness is that it is impossible to create a painting that faithfully imitates the model.  Otherwise, the undeniable strength of this method is that it succeeds – as it has been already said – in capturing something that belongs to the moment and moreover enables the beginning of interesting games of exaggeration. The expressions of faces can express grotesque and tragic looks, pathetic and funny or sad and merry states, arrogant and humble attitudes, in short, what Ormandík is primarily interested in and fascinated by.  That is why in his case any possible losses are abundantly compensated for by significant gains.

Since I am trying to describe the specifics of this method of creation, it must be noted that speed is his quality which can not go unnoticed. The process of creation is so fast that the artist does not and in principio can not have any aesthetic distance from the work. Only when the creation is completed and when a sharp border separates the activity from the work of art, can it be said that his striving was or was not crowned with success, that he succeeded in capturing at least a part of what regularly belongs to the moment.

As this piece is winding down, I am looking for an appropriate form of conclusion. If I also want to get as close as possible, through the style I have been describing, it would be most appropriate if I stopped in mid sentence.  This would express my understanding of what the artist has created and is creating and at the same time, it would leave a huge space for questions of the type – what does this mean? But I equally pride myself on my style and that is why I have chosen a different ending. When I repeatedly look at the paintings from his most recent large exhibition entitled Veľké veci (Great Things) I come to the conclusion that Marek Ormandík has indeed painted great things. But be careful! The title Veľké veci can not be interpreted as a reference to the size of his paintings. Yes, several large paintings were exhibited there, but that does not mean that we should read the title of this exhibition in such a superficial manner. Veľké veci also refers to the fact that the work deals with great things, the things that are worth painting. People and animals are those things for Ormandík, because each of these living creatures can be observed and despite that, there will always be something in them that will persistently resist our knowledge and understanding. Thank God, because if this were not so, what would nourish the work of Marek Ormandík?

Svätí za dedinou / Saints beyond the Village

Súčasťou pustovníckeho života bolo do značnej miery sebatrýznenie a utrpenie s dlhými pôstmi.
V posledných troch rokoch takmer denníkovou formou maľuje rôzne kľačiace postavy so zopätými rukami v približne rovnakej polohe a s rovnakým gestom, s gloriolou nad hlavou.

---------------------------------------------------

To become a saint beyond the village means to leave the community and take the path of self-sacrifice in the form of the highest of all secular missions. Many of those who chose this destiny are unknown. Names of some of them have been registered and remembered, but only the few have been canonized.  Finally, they have not sought the earthly fame. Saints beyond the village have been admired and reviled, respected and mocked by children and fools. When we were children and stopped and thought for a while, our grandparents used to admonish us: “Do not stand here like a saint beyond the village!”
The eremitic life included self-torture and fasting. St. Anthony the Great (251?–356), who is regarded as the father of monasticism, gave away all of his property and took to the desert, seeking as ascetic lifestyle. He is also credited with assisting in number of miraculous healings. Priests and bishops asked his advice, and Emperor Constantine the Great and his sons wrote to him and asked him for a reply. Under his influence, thousands of Christians left their homes and opted for eremitic life. Among the most radical ones were the so-called stylites, such as St. Simeon Stylites (390–459), living 37 years on a small platform on top of a pillar. St. Svorad-Andrew (980?–1034?) “was sleeping in a sitting position on a block surrounded by a fence with sharp spikes. When his body, overcome by sleep, leaned to any side, the pain caused by a sharp pike woke him up immediately... After undressing his dead body, they found a chain sunk deep into his flesh, which had to cause him permanent suffering.”  Some hermits sought solitude and silence. The main idea was asceticism and rejection of property. St. Francis (1182–1226) lived his life in a total poverty and was preaching to birds and animals. “As soon as the holy fathers advocating and teaching the blessed monastic life were inflamed with a holy divine desire and rejected everything that is beautiful and precious on the earth, they began to avoid ostentatious deeds. They lived in seclusion and did good deeds, following the way of Christ.”  Prokop of Ustjug (died in 1302) “led such an ascetic life that the strictest monastic asceticism could not rival it: he was sleeping naked on a dunghill. He accepted a little bit of food from godly people, but never took a bit from the rich.”  St. Francis of Paola (1416–1507) was given a mystical gift of bilocation (the ability/instances in which an individual is said to be, or appears to be, located in two distinct places at the same instant in time). St. Nil of Stolbensk (died in 1555) slept upright, supported only by two crutches, to continue praying at night.
The theme of saints has also attracted Marek Ormandík. As a distinctive figure on Slovak art scene he has chosen the representation of solitaries: the Saints beyond the Village. The work follows indirectly in the artist´s illustrations to Dante´s Purgatory and the cycle of paintings and sculptures entitled Purgatory by Marek Ormandík, developing the idea of self-examination. Over the last three years he has painted different kneeling figures with clasped hands and halo in approximately the same position and with the same gesture. All of them are represented in profile. Though their heads are slightly turned towards a viewer, they are immersed in their own thoughts. In spite of a rather small format, the figures are shown with a certain amount of detail with the expressive expression. The intermeshing lines, deliberately oversized head and undersized limbs, suggested pellucid substance surrounding the figures – this is Ormandík´s characteristic handwriting identifiable at first sight. The artist focuses on both individual personalities and a broader area of spiritual life. As the artist put it, “for me, the strongest visual motif was a kneeling man with clasped hands represented in profile. In this motif I felt humility, plea, apology, submissiveness, slavery, resignation, wish, adoration, request... I also liked the very silhouette, which is actually a finished pictogram.” To Marek Ormandík it represents both the maximalist and minimalist principles, which is, in case of his expressive painting, rather a strange concept. It requires a certain dose of asceticism, humility and immersion in a problem. It is also necessary to clean up the mind and forget all the previous pictures. According to the artist, the paintings have not been made in a graphic manner, i.e. by multiplication of the same, but in an imperfect “painting” manner. The cycle is based on the nature of a prayer, which, though the words are still the same, is always different and the repetition makes it stronger and stronger.
The saints are usually represented with different attributes, but Marek Ormandík´s Saints beyond the Village are anonymous. Moreover, they are placed in unspecified environment and lack any other hints. Yet, one painting is perceived in a different way than the entire series. The installation is supplemented with an oversized laminated painted statue representing a kneeling, praying figure. The most characteristic feature of the Saints beyond the Village, or Almost Saint, as Marek Ormandík sometimes calls them, is the expression of plea. In case of saints, it is supposed to be a prayer for the others. Naturally, the question arises: Why saints beyond the village? Why not in the village? On the one hand, it is because their voluntary stay outside the communities, on the other hand, it is because our problem to accept a different way of life. Marek Ormandík, however, is not unambiguous. By using a black halo he challenges, or relativizes, the interpretation. Black halo may symbolise both a big sinner seeking refuge in prayer and a man burdened with deadly sins experiencing a radical moral transformation. As the artist put it, “he is saint, but only almost. And perhaps he is a villain.” And I would like to add that he is certainly a reformed villain.

Basic criteria for canonization included saints´ holy life and deeds and proof of their miracles, in some cases even the remains.

Jajkele sa rozpráva s Bohom / Jajkele Has a Conversation with God

- Tomáš Janovic

Pane, si geniálny umelec. Vymyslel si ľudskú hlavu. Ale to nie je všetko. Mohol si ju prepchať rôznymi taľafatkami, ovešať ornamentálnymi zbytočnosťami, ale ty si majster.

Tebe stačili štyri detaily - oči, ústa, nos a uši.

Preto ti dávam do láskavej pozornosti obrazy Mareka Ormandíka.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord, you are a brilliant artist. You invented the human head. And that is not all. You could have stuffed it full of various trifles and hung needless ornamental things on it, but you are the master. All you needed was four details – eyes, mouth, nose and ears.
Every head is unique including mine.
Four details only, essential of course, nothing more, nothing less, and a head is a head.
Great art is always simple.
Lord, as I have already said, you are a great artist. You have a sense of proportion, you have excellent taste. That’s why I would like to bring to your kind attention the paintings of Marek
Ormandík.
His heads also have only the four details which you created, but they live more intensively than many of ours.
Do not envy him.

O tvorcovi tohto diela len to najpodstatnejšie.

Jána Lebiša a doc.

Ťažko hovoriť o vývoji, hádam iba o tom, ako s pribúdajúcimi skúsenosťami rástla i istota: paradoxne v expresívnej a gestickej maľbe.

Boli časy, keď maliari maľovali to, o čom rozprávali kroniky, legendy či potulní speváci.

nad maliarmi, a dneska Giotto žiari

Píše o tom E. H. Gombrich v knihe Umenie a ilúzia: „Pri opisovaní reliéfov v očistci pripomína pykajúcim dušiam ako príklad pokory Dávida tancujúceho pred archou zmluvy:

„Lid před ním zřel jsem dělen v sedm sborů,

jenž dva mé smysly zaváděl svým zdáním,

že jeden: „Pějí!“, druhý: „Ne!“ řek´ v sporu.

Také dým z kadidelnic, který za ním

byl zobrazen, ved nos a oči stále

do různic tvrzením a popíráním.“

Iluzionizmus umenia minulých vekov viedol až k deziluzionizmu moderného umenia, to súčasné, využívajúc triky a efekty najmodernejšej techniky, ťaží z obidvoch princípov.

Mal to byť akýsi medzistupeň medzi obidvoma extrémami a šanca daná práve tým, ktorí zomreli a nestihli uskutočniť premenu hriešnikov na kajúcnikov.

MEDZI ANJELOM A DIABLOM

V súdny deň prídu dobrí do raja, zlých uvrhnú do pekla.

Veľký príbeh Biblie svojou obraznosťou inšpiroval tvorcov, básnikov i maliarov.

Básnici a vizionári uprednostňovali skôr dievčenskú (ženskú) podstatu anjelov.

Novotvary pomôžu vyjadriť viac než opisy a konvenčné výrazy.

POSTAVY A SCÉNY

Smrť a Diabol: dve témy, ktorých obľuba nehasne a trvá už nejaké to tisícročie, dve témy vyjadrujúce absolútny zápor. Pozadie väčšinou zostáva neutrálne, krajina chýba, dramatickosť scény vyjadruje práve onen pomer plnosti a prázdna obrazovej plochy.

I. PERSONALITY, SCENE, CONTEXT

Perhaps a one-page introduction won’t be too much of a burden for a text introducing the work of a painter and sculptor, in fact his most recent phase; to describe it, characterize and introduce it in context. It means in terms of connections, but unlike his previous work, not in the context of the domestic scene or even a foreign one: if it exists at all then only as distant, long faded echoes.

Only the most essentials on the artist

Marek Ormandík (born on December 19, 1968 in Bratislava) studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava and then from 1987 to 1993 at the Academy of Fine Arts under prof. Dušan Kállay, doc. Ján Lebiš and doc. Igor Rumanský. He exhibited for the first time (with Jozef Červeň and František Malík) in Bratislava in 1991. And so he entered the fine art scene at the beginning of the 1990s: naturally, at the time of changes and when a new generation of fine artists was coming into play at the beginning of a new decade but without manifestoes or program statements. That does not mean that this generation would only continue in what the previous generation offered; on the contrary, it was possible to observe how one of its most agile groups (a kind of “avant-garde” minority) declared themselves as followers of the new-conceptualism and multimedia output, while the majority continued in the traditional disciplines of painting, sculpting and graphic art. However, nothing prevented any of it from taking place and everything was possible under the all-inclusive (and at the same time meaningless) label of post-modernism. The word “generation” had also lost its validity even before 1990. The fall of the Iron Curtain and the return of freedom opened a space which at first seemed endless. That was just an illusion, but it did not bother loners who do not wait for suitable times.

At the beginning of the 1980s, there was nothing generational or group-like, even in the art work of Marek Ormandík. It was his good luck that in a relatively short period of time he found his own style which he later only transformed. Doing away with the residue of descriptiveness (which we would not preach to students of the department of free graphic art and illustration) he simplified the form and if later he changed anything, then only the themes, technique and naturally, the dimension of individual works. It is difficult to talk about development, perhaps only about how his confidence grew with experience: paradoxically, in expressive and gesture painting.

And so we talk about the present, the 1990s up to 2010. The decade ends which characterized certain trends and artists, who within such framework worked for the entire decade and created work, which for the generation just coming into their own will seem as partially late and partially ridiculous. Everything repeats.

It is not necessary to mention that from the times of Duchamp we have been talking about how we don’t need paintings. It is a joke that has been repeated a hundred times (and which even grows funnier for certain people) about the fact that the traditional disciplines (painting and sculpture in particular) are perfectly dead. Superstitions and ghosts, either real or imagined, also exist along with this mythology of Modernism. One superstition says that the entire continent of modern (contemporary) painting is hounded by the ghost of illustrativeness. It is said that neither painting nor any art work in general should be created on a literary theme.

And so we must be rather thankful for the fact that the art of painting has been illustrative since ancient times and only due to the fact that the themes were simply given. There was a time when painters painted what the chronicles, legends and story tellers talked about.

Perhaps this introduction will suffice in providing a rough outline of the work of Marek Ormandík and also somehow in warning everyone who would reproach the current cycle of paintings and sculptures based on the theme of Dante’s Purgatory for its illustrativeness: because it is barely there. There was more of it a few years back when he created illustrations for Dante’s Inferno. 65 color and black-and-white drawings accompanied the thirty three cantos; other drawings appeared on the flyleaf, title, cover, etc. Thus he stood for some time as the last in the line of illustrators which began with Botticelli and Michelangelo (although his illustrations were lost somewhere at sea according to legend). At the beginning of the 19th century, it was powerfully renewed by William Blake through his “fine art associations.” The expression also fits those artists who, like Marek Ormandík, constantly draw inspiration from Dante’s Comedy.

II. WHAT IS TOPICAL AND WHAT IS INSPIRING

Painters draw inspiration from everywhere and their reservoir, as we can constantly see for ourselves, is inexhaustible. Anything human is not alien to their nature, as opposed to Dante, the poet whose work (and his judgment of human kind) is entitled a “Comedy”. The attribute “Divine” was later given by readers; its author certainly did not need to show in the title that he is the spokesman of the Absolute. But he cared most about the nearly absolute perfection of the work and in Gothic times, when cathedrals were built tall, the builders found this perfection in mathematical proportions. The poet did the same when he mathematically developed his grand poem. Every one of its sections had 33 cantos and he selected the three-line tercet as the rhyme scheme. The way he forced the work’s symmetry is also amazing: 33,444 words constituted the “material” for Inferno, 33,379 for Purgatorio and 33,444 for Paradiso. It is not the quantity but the austerity, the tightness of the diction that characterizes this work, the expressiveness and emotionality of which is given through the selection: readers counted that it contains 6,215 adjectives and only 17 superlatives. He began his work in 1300, when he was 35 years old and his life was, as he says in one of the verses of the Comedy, “in mid voyage”. Pope Boniface VIII, who in that very year turned Rome into a site of pilgrimages and was making outrageous money on the pilgrims, supplied him with a direct inspiration. It was the Pope who was to become the disgrace of the Church and who, as Montanelli wrote, “did not believe in God but was afraid of the Devil”.

If, in the Middle Ages, Paradiso, Inferno and Purgatorio represented the spheres of the world beyond, into which the theologians and poets only peeked in their imagination, today they are rather synonyms of life on earth, which, when people are not missing anything, is Heaven and in the opposite case, Hell.  People only rarely speak of Purgatory. While twenty years ago, Communists promised “heaven on earth” (and Werich sang about it) today’s politicians, diplomats, generals, policemen, bankers, brokers, managers, and scientists are convinced of the fact that they know how to better lead nations and not forgetting their own need, they also consider themselves to be the legal executors of noble ideas. Nevertheless, the outcome is a world divided into rich countries and poor countries, geographical heavens and hells. We could say, “nothing new under the sun” yet it is the present era of planetary information regarding the state of matters where some progress can be seen, which was unimaginable in Dante’s century.

III. IMAGES OF DARKNESS

The Middle Ages is generally considered as a time of religious raving, foolish crusades and a kind of spiritual darkness in which faith blended with superstitions. Wide masses of people, but also the most significant scholars and theologians, believed in the inferno and the presence of the Devil on earth. Saint Thomas Aquinas thought that Hell “is situated in the lowest part of the earth” while Pope Gregory the Great claimed that the craters of volcanoes, which spout lava only so that there would be room for the next dammed, are the entrances to Hell. Scholars and uneducated people led disputes about the qualities of God the Father. In his book “Dante e il suo secolo,” Indro Montanelli gives an example of a weaver of Toulouse, who in 1247 shouted in church: “If God the Father is truly omnipotent and he saves only one of his children out of hundreds of thousands, then according to me he is a villain and deserves to be spat in the face.”   Dante was born in 1260 in Florence.  Eckhart of Hochheim was his contemporary in Germany. In the Papal Bull of Pope John XXII in 1329, the theologian and philosopher was accused of 26 heretic articles, one of which included the statement “whoever reviles even God himself, praises God through that blaspheming”. But Eckhart was a mystic working with the instrument of logic. God can not be good, he said, because what is good can be even better.

These were the times of religious wars and the Church especially fought against sectarians. In the 13th century, it was in particular the Albigen movement, which through the words of their theologians proclaimed that all matter is of the Devil’s essence and all masses, sacraments and religious paintings are damnable. In 1209, a crusade was proclaimed against this sect and Arnald Amalrich, the Papal Legate also participated. Again I quote Montanelli: “When at the fall of the town of Béziers someone asked him if any difference should be made between the orthodox ones and the heretics he replied: “Kill them all. The Lord already knows his own.”  These were the times in which Dante was born. Somebody could object that these were the cruel times in essence and it is simply impossible to compare these times with the present and “common” events such bombing, during which the criminal is liquidated together with hundreds of innocent people. But Dante does not criticize the cruelty of his times, he only points out the fact that those who are guilty of it will be punished. The guilty (sinners) will not escape punishment.

Today there are no doubts about the fact that Dante’s Divine Comedy is a supreme work of art, but it is also a work of the political involvement of its author and naturally a mirror of human error. Due to the power and rule of criminals or idiots and naturally his own lack of wisdom, he lived the majority of his life in exile. This aspect of the work can not be alien for his contemporaries, who experienced or witnessed something similar. Fate was also cruel to the poet’s work; it was forgotten for centuries. Even Goethe doubted its significance at the end of the 18th century said, “Inferno seems to me completely repudiating, Purgatorio ambiguous and Paradiso boring. “ Many of our contemporaries would agree with these characteristics. But it would be quite daring to expect from the poet and militant Christian that he would depict inferno as a nice and cozy place to stay. The theme of Inferno was attractive for the painters of the past centuries especially due to its horror.

In this context, it is interesting to note that Dante was well informed about his contemporaries – painters and that he also felt entitled to be a critic of their work. Giotto, the most significant painter of those times, was his contemporary and a good friend. According to legend, the painter invited his friend into his household and introduced him to his children. Dante allegedly asked the painter, how was it possible, that he, who painted so sweet children, is the father of such ungracious offspring. Giotto replied: “That would be because I paint during the day and sculpt at night.”

In the eleventh canto of Purgatorio, Dante mentioned several painters who were his contemporaries, but he could not help but place one above the other:

“O empty glory of the powers of humans!

How briefly green endures upon the peak

unless an age of dullness follows it.

In painting Cimabue thought he held

the field, and now it's Giotto they acclaim

the former only keeps a shadowed fame.”*

*(Note: English translation by Allen Mandelbaum (980 – 1984))

The poet’s verses demonstrate the significance he placed on perfection, an illusionary but at the same time deceptive function of art. That was also the reason why he placed this work in his Purgatorio. E. H. Gomrich writes about this in his book “Art and Illusion”: When describing the reliefs in Purgatory, he reminds the suffering souls of David dancing before the Arch of the Covenant as an example of humility:

“People were shown in front; and all that group,

divided into seven choirs, made

two of my senses speak one sense said, No,

the other said, Yes, they do sing; just so,

about the incense smoke shown there, my nose

and eyes contended, too, with yes and no.”*

*(Note: English translation by Allen Mandelbaum (980 – 1984))

The illusionism of the art of the past lead to the disillusionism of modern art and contemporary art profits from both principles by using the tricks and effects of the most recent technology.

There is nothing left but to say that the paintings of Marek Ormandík, in fact his method of painting delivery, excludes that literal character of illusionism without losing its emotionality, which is a matter of shortcuts and suggestions.

IV. PURGATORY

While people dreamed of Heaven and were always afraid of Hell, Purgatory was invented by religious fathers much later. It was meant to be some intermediate stage between both extremes and a chance which was given to those who died and did not manage to carry out the transformation from sinners to penitents. It was considered that the prayers of the survivors and masses for the deceased were not enough for those who died in mortal sin. Dante’s biographer Montanelli, in the book already mentioned above, stated that the terms and meaning of purgatory (as a new hope) began to be understood only later. But it was Saint Augustine who “arrived at the conclusion that the punishment meted out to sinners for forgiven sins, but not fully expiated during their lifetime, was probably not final. Pope Gregory I approved his thought.”  Nevertheless Petr Damiánský, a preacher, contributed to the popularization of Purgatory in his suggestive preaching on one hand. On the other, Knight Owen, who allegedly in Ireland while descending in the well of Saint Patrick visited Hell and then Purgatory, claimed, “although people suffer great pain there, they endure it in the belief that it will end one day.”

If today, when observing the emptiness of the skies which we call Heaven (and which is reminiscent of the emptiness of a painting canvas which will become a painting) we stretch our fantasy and imagine an endless Universe, we quite differ from our predecessors in the Middle Ages and their ideas of the fullness of Heaven and Hell and other places of the world beyond, which are the construction sites and serve their purpose.  And so Dante, in his poetic vision, saw Inferno plastically, as a sink, the neck of which is aimed at the center of the earth and descends in seven circles all the way to the place of absolute freeze where Satan sits.  He described Purgatory as a high mountain on an island surrounded by a sea, a mountain, the cut off peak of which is reached through seven terraces in an alpine-climbing manner. Naturally, the aim is not the view of the surrounding world but rather an outlook on the future; it is a place of suffering and repentance. Modern writers, such as Jaroslav Durych, also see Purgatory in this way: “The human spirit in early life is not at all able to imagine Hell, and what poets described for us as Hell is only Purgatory. Although Purgatory is a place of horrifying terrors, it is also a place of hope, because everyone in Purgatory is already saved forever.”

Thus, it would also be quite probable that the images of Hell that significant painters of the past (Bosch, Breughel, etc.) left for us are only visions of the suffering of Purgatory. But it is not clear why these artists, who with such mastery painted Heaven and, with a fantasy which knew no limits, Hell, completely neglected the existence of Purgatory.

The theme did not attract painters; it’s as simple as that.  As opposed to the absolute notions of Heaven and Hell, Purgatory was only a temporary place and a relative notion.

In modern times, which have brought suffering in unseen forms to people, the image of Purgatory used to be connected with life on earth. So, like Hell on earth and as opposed to the title of a book published in the last century by Josef Florian at Stará Říše na Moravě, Purgatory Begins with Heaven on Earth.

V. BETWEEN ANGEL AND DEVIL

It should be the opposite, but angels are divided into good ones and bad ones. The good ones are protectors of humans, the bad ones belong to the Devil’s entourage.

Let us begin this contemplation on the Devil with a short treatise. Naturally a devil settled in our land, which is a familiar devil, almost human; he can be cheated and one can play all sorts of jokes of him and thus, almost all the humor of folklore and modern culture is based on this figure. Almost everyone likes the devil. But not the Devil, because that is the true and ancient enemy of humankind, generally and individually known as the tempter and seducer. Generally it is understood that the Devil is so obsessed by evil that he is not interested in anything else, but more contemplative theologians, and what is interesting – poets– know more about his nature.  W. H. Auden, the poet, has an interesting thought on this theme in the book The Dyer’s Hand: “The Devil is not interested in evil, because, according to his definition, he is already convinced of evil that he has it. For him, Auschwitz is as banal as the date of the Battle at Hastings. He is only interested in good as something that he has not yet succeeded in understanding with his absolute prequalification, he is obsessed with good… One of our greatest spiritual dangers is constituted by the assumption that the Devil has some personal interest in our perdition. He could care less about our souls, as Don Juan could care less about the body of Donna Elvira. I am his “thousandth and third in Spain.”

People of the Middle Ages thought in more simple opposites: God or the Devil, absolute good or absolute evil. This was a consequence of Manichean heresy which was widespread: according to it, humankind had two equal lords, God and Satan. And this simple black-and-white view characterizes the times in which Dante lived. Jacques le Goff, the French Medievalist, in his best work Medieval Civilization, writes about this way of thinking: “If the deed is good, it comes from God, if it is bad, it comes from the Devil. On Judgment Day the good will go Heaven and the bad will be condemned to Hell. Although the Middle Ages knew Purgatory, it was not acknowledged.”

This example also demonstrates how Dante exceeded “general” thinking.

And so the angels are intermediaries between God and humans. According to Honorius Augustodunensis, the medieval thinker, every human has an angel and from the moment the soul is sent down to body. Angels then, reveal themselves to people in human form.

An angel is also at the entrance to Dante’s Purgatory.

The great story of the Bible evoked authors, poets and painters by its figurativeness. We can read in the chronicles that in Dante’s time, church walls were covered with images of devils, but painters also painted angels, whose mission and we could also say “job description,” was information and protection. Angels as protectors stand on both sides of the Madonna and Child in the paintings of Master Cimabue, who according to legend, was a teacher of Dante’s friend, Giotto. They are also present in Giotto’s paintings; they mostly float in the air. Reminiscent of birds, they symbolize speed and constant vigilance; they are also reminiscent of the ability to fly which for ages was unattainable for people.

While Cimabue viewed his angels as figures who by their static character remind that they are permanently present and have the appearance of young girls, Giotto filled the skies with his angels. In his original presentation, they are in fact only half-bodies dashing across the sky, beings of an uncertain gender. After all, numerous studies were written about the androgenic character of angels which clarified what seemed to be problematic.

Poets and visionaries preferred the girly (feminine) essence of angels. This is how Jakub Deml, the poet, saw them in April 1932 on his trip to Yugoslavia in the Church of Virgin Mary with a dome above the main altar: “... frescos of angels looking like birds, which not only touched me extremely, in fact surprised me, because, due to a strange development of human thinking and emotions, as if we were Turks only, we imagine an angel in the form of a fragile girl, who exists and tomorrow usually is as if thrown in a stove, seemingly without roots, like wild flowers, but still touching the ground, although only slightly.” And this is the poet who published his dreams and visions in the book with the “Dantesque” title: My Purgatory.

Ormandík introduces “angel-birds”, i.e., angels that resemble birds in his paintings. A whole flock of them, in numbers that fill the skies, because their name is quantity: every individual has his/her angel. So, not a creature, but beings intervening in the lives of people and despite the fatalism, which says, that human life is a crossword puzzle, the last letter of which will be filled in by Lady Death herself: she is feminine in our languages, as opposed to the neuter gender of angels. There are no limits to the randomness of explanation. New formations will help to express more than descriptions and conventional expressions.

VI. FIGURES AND SCENES

The painter is the figuralist; his activities lie in placing a figure in a painting so that this figure becomes a character of the work. While a human being, mythical being, animal or even a common object can become a figure, the characters rather evoke a story. Figures and scenes describe the titles of paintings:  they are Beggars, Prayers, the Grip Reaper and scenes (stories) as well, Laughing Skeletons, “He Fucked up Death” (which is an inventive connection of the two most important themes: the absoluteness of death and sex),  “Death to Death” (surely an interesting topic for theologians and philosophers) “Joint Supplication” (in which even devils pray) and the painting “the most illustrative”–“The Third Canto”.

A praying man is a prayer; a begging man is a beggar; as if every prayer did not necessarily also have to be a supplication. If I failed to find both words in a Slovak dictionary, it does not mean that they do not exist. Just being in the paintings is enough; these “prayers” have existed for several years in the work of Marek Ormandík.

Death and the Devil: two themes whose popularity never wanes, and lasts for some millennium, two themes expressing absolute negation. Black and red in the symbolism of colors.  If life is a game, death is the victor; death takes all. Death-grim reaper-skeleton as themes of fine art have existed from ancient times and supposedly, the walls of churches in the Middle Ages were literally covered with skeletons as a reminder of something that even in the form of death dances never losses its topicality. The background mostly remains neutral, the landscape is missing, the dramatic character of the scene is expressed by the ratio of the fullness and emptiness of the painting area.
